IndyRef: one year on

On this day one year ago, people in Scotland woke to find out the result of the independence referendum. Thousands of them chose to channel the energy of the debate, and their the political engagement they felt after the result, into the Scottish Green Party.

The Edinburgh branch now has over 2,000 members, and we want to take this opportunity to thank all of our members – old and new – for what has been a fantastic year.

We’ve seen packed branch meetings, an amazing team spreading the green message during the Westminster election, fun-filled socials, and just this month our best ever by-election result in Leith Walk. We’ve seen new members getting involved and volunteering for roles they never thought they’d do, and old members getting re-inspired to take to the streets. We’ve seen a fantastic group of Edinburgh Young Greens getting active, and local teams springing up across the city.

The next year will see us campaigning to get more green MSPs than ever before in the Holyrood elections, and gearing up for the local council elections in 2017. We’ll also continue to spread the green message of a fair, just and sustainable Scotland – taking action in support of refugees and migrants, fighting cruel austerity measures and calling for firm and urgent action on climate change.

There’s a lot to do, but together we can achieve real change. If you haven’t already, get involved with your local team, think about what skills you might have to offer, and make sure you come along to conference on the 10th and 11th October.

We hope all of our members have enjoyed the last year with the Edinburgh Greens – here’s to the next one, and to a Green Scotland.

Alys and Phyl,
Co-Conveners, Edinburgh Green Party
